There is a beautiful song in Marathi language about the titled set of people as – “I have never revolted, I never involved myself in any strike, I never prohibited anything”. These people are always submissive, never have strong opinions. They mostly prefer to be on the threshold.
Most of the life of these goes into maintaining the diplomacy, from home, to school to college, in jobs till death. No particular opinion or strong views. They generally go with the majority, but only when the time the majority gets formed, till then, they keep themselves on the border line.
We shouldn’t mistake these with of those silent, cool and calm people. Though they are silent, they don’t hesitate to express themselves, many a times in descent and most civic way. They don’t shy away from distancing from the majority and put everything in black and white.
So, why do we have ‘the threshold sitting’ people in our society. Is it the upbringing, the intention to not to hurt anyone-to the majority, afraid of being alone or isolated or the ‘forced contentment’ they think they have or the burden of responsibilities on their shoulders?
For many of us, the reason may be the latter one. If not, then it is just cowardice not to express ourselves and in certain cases not crossing the threshold, even if it disregards our responsibilities.
