Last Sunday was in the super mart for some grocery shopping. I was enjoying the shopping overhearing the couple next to me – a couple with one generation gap in between them – grandfather and his granddaughter.
While in the aisle, was eagerly listening to the curious questions of the kid and answering to all her curiosity with serious attention like he was answering to some elderly person.
We grew up listening to the stories, how grandparents tell stories to the grandkids, the pampering, enjoyment etc. Somehow, I was not able to get that as my parents had to shift to the city for the job.
What is it so special, making this bond one of the most liked apart from the love and affection? I think there may be many reasons.
As a parent we look after for all the needs of our kids but we may not be able to give much time to the curious minds, because of the hectic schedule, work hours, travel etc.
On the other hand, the elderly at home, mainly retired, has good time with them. They also want to talk to someone, give away the experiences they lived. Tell the stories. Its two ways these days, the grandparents too learn from the kids on how to handle the gadgets, make calls, and send messages.
Here is a win-win for the kid and the grandparents as well. This may be one of many other reasons for the bond.
One more reason can be, in their prime days, despite wanting to spend the time with their kids, it was not possible because of the reasons mentioned above. They love to catch up that lost time now with their grandkids.
Whatever it may be, lucky are those who spent time and grew up listening to their grandparents’ stories.
