George Orwell and his books, known for putting things upfront in most peculiar way. It may be ‘Animal Farm’ or the ‘1984’ or many others.
In the book “1984”, with its intriguing new lexicon of Newspeak, Oldspeak, Doublethink, ThoughtPolice, ThoughtCrime, BigBrother, Ministry of Love, Ministry of Peace, and many others having exact opposite works to be carried out.
The protagonist Winston Smith, his colleagues, always under the watch of BigBrother. You can’t trust anyone and open up, not knowing who is the spy and the person of thoughtpolice. It’s even difficult to even think otherwise and can’t even show it on your face.
The only confidentiality you can maintain is in your mind. All the thinking, internal battles, mental oppression everything needs to be kept in the boundaries of your mind and heart.
But while going through the book, what I found was, all the people, though they pretending that they are with BigBrother, somewhere inside them, they used to hate it. Even those, who are keen to carry out the regime’s activities and show the enthusiasm are also the victims of it.
Julia – a colleague turned lover with Winston, one of those who was over enthused, post getting in touch with him confessed that.
Because of the oppression and afraid of talking, everyone thought that they are in minority, a minority of people who are thinking against the regime.
Later when they get caught and get tortured, they see many people around them are brought there, their colleagues, people working for BigBrother and many, which otherwise seemed difficult to think, are going through the same mental harassment like the one Winston going through.
So, in our daily life too, I think, we consider ourselves of those minority. If something bad happens with us, we keep crying, thinking it’s me only going through this. It’s me only who missed the bus, it’s me only who has to wait for the things. It’s me only on whose face the ticket window gets closed.
Actually it’s never like that. We forget about the people standing behind us, they too missed on same things.
It’s just we don’t know about the others.
What I meant to say is the minority is never the minority, it’s a majority with no thread connecting to them.
Don’t know whether I am able to put my point here.
