Like many things in life, I am weak in budgeting too. Till graduation I was at home with my parents, so I never had to worry on how to manage it.
When I was away from home, I relied on my room mates. Means, whatever monthly amount used to come from my parents, I used to hand it over to my room mate and he used manage it on behalf of our all other room mates.
Later when I joined the job, that time as well, I was a bit careless about on managing expenses.
But when I got married and purchased a new home, that time, it started pinching me.
The fixed expenses, the EMIs all used to get deducted on particular dates and for that I had to allocate monies accordingly.
Thanks to my better half, she is better at managing it compared to me.
On budgeting, I feel is, that whatever supposed to go, shall go by default. Budgeting just helps to know under which heads the expenses happened or are going to happen.
So, I mostly try not to put my time and head into that.
During graduation, one of my roommates religiously and regularly used to enter his daily expenses in his small note book. At the end of the year, he kept telling us, this much amount was spent on such and such activities. He still maintains that.
I sometimes envy that and start doing it, but like the New Year resolution of going for daily jogging, it also gets discontinued after a few days.
I prefer working on macro numbers – my salary, and my expenses in approximate numbers.
One thing I ensure is that my expenses should not be more than my earnings and with God’s grace, it’s happening in the same way.
