There is Just One Life

Almost half [49%] of Britons admit to purchasing small treats when feeling down. This behaviour is even more prominent within the 18–34 age bracket, almost two-thirds [67%].

The above is from an article on www.marketingweek.com, referencing a recent study from Ipsos, a well—known market research agency that put forward a few trends about Gen Z.

They call it doom spending. Also while doing this, they don’t even think of the spending they are doing irrespective of what they have or earn.

People around us always talking to enjoy life, we don’t know about tomorrow, and life is uncertain. Moreover, we see a lot of movies, emphasizing this with an inspiring story, good cast with exotic locations.

Even various brands too showcase it to the consumers to let them splurge more.

We fall for it. We go on in literally similar ways in what is shown in the movies or get carried away by the brand commercials.

We enjoy that particular day and moment. But then…

As we say ‘we live once’ doesn’t mean we live only one day…, there is another day, and a new tomorrow awaits us.

“Live once” is terminology, which says about the whole life we spend here on the earth.

And that whole life needs constant earning before you splurge it in the way you want to.

We know how conservative our grandparents were, and our parents as well. How they always used to think about ‘saving for the rainy days’.

My mother used to save some milk, even if it was half a cup for the night, saying if some relatives came, we should have the milk for making the tea.

The same culture is inculcated in us. [who are termed as millennials]. Buy the so-called Gen Z doesn’t even want to give it a thought.

Born with having everything with such ease, make them think everything is easy and it’s okay to live in the moment.

No patience at all. Companies are coming up with many plans like “by now, pay later”, and credit cards — the biggest example of encouraging such a mentality.

They forget that this behaviour of theirs is going to catch hold of them one day for sure.

Please don’t mistake me here, I am nowhere saying we shouldn’t enjoy, or go beyond sometimes, but making it an everyday thing won’t help us.

The below link has a Gazal sung by the Late Pankaj Udhas ji. It’s in one of the Indian languages. It sums up what is changing and how we used to live within our means making it a more peaceful and satisfied life. [song credit: YouTube and respective channel owner]
