Once there lived an old man, a sage-like person, who never harmed anyone in life. An honest guy, with no greed for anything, despite the hardships he goes through in his life.
People used to trust him and he too never defaulted on the same. He was like a god’s gift to the village.
One day, a few traders en route to the marketplace were looking for someplace for shelter as night fell. When came to know about this guy, they turned to his place. They agreed to give some amount in exchange for a night’s stay and food.
After dinner, they discussed further travel plans and for giving the said amount to the old man, they opened a sack full of diamonds and other precious stones they were carrying with them.
Looking at that, God knows how, but the old man got greedy. Overhearing their plans, he cautioned them that, on route to their next trade village, there was a danger of bandits.
Better to hide the precious stones in the stomach, so that they won’t be able to find out and hence it would be safe to travel. He also told them he would help them pass through the bandit’s place. Traders hid it in their stomachs as told.
Actually, in his mind, he hatched a separate plan to take them out of the village and in the mid-way to kill all of them and loot the treasure.
As they approached to bandits’ place, the crows, which used to inform bandits about the people carrying treasure started cawing. It’s an arrangement the bandits had with the crows.
The bandits got the hint and they came and surrounded the old man and all the traders and asked to surrender all the goods. When they found nothing in the bags they were carrying, the bandits decided to cut them and to get the treasure as they were sure that the crows would never give wrong information.
Now, everyone was frightened and the old man too shivering. He knew that only he didn’t have it in his stomach, but anyway, he too would also get dissected in the process.
So, he requested the bandits, to cut him off first, if they found anything inside him then they should do it to others, or else, they should let them go.
They cut him off and found nothing, feeling strange about how crows gave the wrong info. They allow the traders to go.
In this, the old man lost his life. Traders praise him thinking he sacrificed his life for them. Villagers at home praised his sacrifice and felt sad that they lost an honest guy.
Only the old man and God knew the reality. The old man, who never in his life thought of doing anything bad, got greedy and decided to fulfil his greed.
But God had different plans and his good Karma finally paid off from getting a blot of being greedy and a murderer. At the same time, his bad karma — getting greedy and thinking bad, got him killed.
It happens, we decide and sometimes go stray for things which we averted so far in life, but our Karma comes in to help us, indirectly stopping us from something bad from our side.
God is Great.
