The Marketing Dilemma: Success vs. Family Well-being

How does one feel when one has a job that makes him feel good at work and makes him concerned when thinking about the things at home?

Imagine a marketing manager in a big organisation, a responsible position.

The company’s future, prospects depend upon his talent, and intelligence.
After spending a lot on market research, the marketing team comes up with a unique product idea. R&D and product team develop the product.
For a longer shelf-life, in order to cover the time from factory to shop shelf and then to consumer homes, it’s been decided (unwillingly) to add preservatives.

Research shows that kids love extra sweet products, and then additional sweetness is put into them. A certain ingredient, a costly and imported one, doesn’t fit in margin calculations and expected profitability won’t come, compromised with a cheaper version.

Creative and media teams come up with beautiful creative, punchy lines to attract kids. Colourful designs, with cartoons to lure kids to the product and demand and insist parents buy one.

Media planners check out all the places, kids are focusing on these days. Social media, online platforms, online games, mostly digital, as digital is the norm today.

On top of that, the trade and sales team add schemes and offers for retail channels and consumers. The offers are so good you won’t think twice to buy it.

Finally, the product gets launched, a successful launch.

Great sales, better profits. All happy at the company. Promotions followed.

The marketing manager when goes home as a dad, the picture changes drastically. The challenges at home are different.

Kids are used to those junk foods, extra sweet, and full of preservatives.
Complete NO to homemade food.

But can’t avoid buying them as these are on sale with hefty discounts. Not buying means a FOMO, lost on value for money.

Kids are always glued to the mobiles. Not even taking their heads out from that digital/social world munching the newly launched product from the company.

That marketing manager cum dad sees the success of the product and hence a happy marketing manager at the company, but at home, he remains an unhappy dad.
