Leaving of your Boss or Subordinate – which one creates a bigger void

We almost spend 1/3rd of the daily time in office, sometimes even more. We come across many people, our colleagues, subordinates, bosses. Years of working together makes a connect, a bond. Among all the staff, the trio – yourself, your boss and your subordinates are the ones with whom the interaction goes on consistently. Mails, messengers and now mostly on Whatsapp. (Whatsapp sometimes is irritating as messages get dropped at any time). The firefighting, the delays, goof ups, celebrations, successes everything part of the working. The bashings many a times for the mistakes and the pat on the back for doing something good.

After spending a good amount of time, we understand the expectations from our bosses and same way we also know what to expect from subordinates. The assurance of taking a decision without consulting to the boss, considering he will anyway back us. In similar way, without asking or guiding, the subordinates planning and executing the things on their own, in same similar way we expected. This gives a sense of relief that everything will be streamlined or at least efforts taken in that line.

And then comes a time, when the boss or subordinate puts in paper.

If the boss puts in papers, then suddenly it feels like you are losing a roof over your head. The new boss, don’t know how he/she will be, will he be authoritative or friendly like the existing ones. Whether we will be unnecessarily tasked or something meaningful work will be carried out. The connect, the camaraderie with existing boss, the ease of asking for leaves and many other things will be missed and the anxiousness of whether we can have the same with the new one takes place in our mind.

And if the subordinate puts in the papers, then it’s like losing your one hand. Many things you freely delegated to him/her, needs to be planned till the next one understands the things. Will he/she be capable of handling the things the way the predecessor used to handle. How much time will go in things getting streamlined, you need to put additional time and always cautious that everything going as per the plan.

We don’t know, which one creates the big void, but certainly it’s difficult to cope up when any of these leave, at least till the things fall in place.
